Look Again!

Focus Scripture:

Deuteronomy 31:8

“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Sometimes you need to look again.

Not because your past has changed, but because you have.

We can become so focused on how far we still have to go that we overlook how far God has already brought us. We see the prayers that haven’t been answered yet. The areas where we’re still growing. The things we thought we would have accomplished by now. The places that still need healing.

And without realizing it, we can measure our lives by what is unfinished instead of recognizing what God has already done.

But today, I felt the Lord reminding me:

Celebrate the progress you have made!

Not perfection.

Progress.

Look again.

That situation that once would have taken you completely under—you’re still standing.

That behavior that once triggered an immediate reaction—you’re learning to pause, pray, and respond differently.

That disappointment you thought you would never recover from—it doesn’t have the same hold on you anymore.

That boundary you were once afraid to establish—you can now maintain without explaining yourself over and over.

That version of you who desperately needed everyone’s approval—she is learning that being accepted by God is enough.

Look again!

You may not be where you want to be, but you are not where you used to be.

God Has Been in Every Step

Deuteronomy 31 takes place during a major transition. Moses is preparing Joshua and the people of Israel for what comes next.

There is unfamiliar territory ahead.

There are battles ahead.

There are things Joshua cannot possibly anticipate.

And yet Moses gives him this assurance:

The Lord Himself goes before you.

What a promise!

Joshua didn’t have to know everything that was ahead because God was already there!

But God wasn’t only ahead of Joshua.

He had been with him all along!

Joshua had witnessed the wilderness. He had seen victories and failures. He had watched God provide, protect, correct, and remain faithful to His people.

So when Joshua looked forward, he had every reason to remember what he had already seen behind him.

And so do you.

Sometimes looking back isn’t about returning to the past.

Sometimes we look back simply to remember:

God brought me through that.

I survived that.

I learned from that.

I grew through that.

I prayed through that.

I cried through that.

And somehow, by the grace of God, I kept moving.

Don’t Let What’s Left Make You Forget How Far You’ve Come

At this stage of life, it can be tempting to evaluate ourselves by what hasn’t happened yet.

Maybe you thought you would be further along.

Maybe some things took longer than you expected.

Maybe life didn’t unfold according to the picture you carried in your younger years.

Maybe you’re still working through some things you thought you would have conquered by now.

But don’t allow what is left to make you dismiss what God has already done.

Growth doesn’t always announce itself.

Sometimes growth looks like responding differently.

Sometimes healing looks like no longer needing an apology.

Sometimes maturity looks like knowing when to speak and when to remain quiet.

Sometimes progress looks like asking for help.

Sometimes courage looks like trying again.

And sometimes faith looks like simply getting up and taking one more step with God.

Celebrate that.

And Look Again!

Maybe you’ve been looking at yourself too critically.

Look again.

Maybe you’ve been focusing on your failures.

Look again.

Maybe you’ve been comparing your journey with someone else’s.

Look again.

But this time, don’t only look for what still needs changing.

Look for evidence of grace.

Look for the places where you’re wiser.

Look for the places where you’re stronger.

Look for the places where you’re softer.

Look for the places where you’ve learned to trust God more deeply.

Look at the woman you were ten years ago.

Five years ago.

Even one year ago.

And then look at the woman standing here today.

You don’t have to deny the work that remains in order to celebrate the work God has already accomplished.

You can celebrate your progress without pretending you have arrived.

And when you turn your eyes toward what is ahead, remember the promise of Deuteronomy 31:8.

The God who walked with you then is with you now.

And the God who is with you now has already gone ahead of you.

So don’t be afraid.

Don’t be discouraged.

There is more ahead.

But before you rush toward the next thing…

Look again.

You and God have already come a mighty long way together.

And that is worth celebrating!

Pause & Reflect

-Where have I been so focused on what still needs to change that I’ve overlooked the progress God has already helped me make?

-What is one area of my life where I can genuinely say, “God, we have come a long way together”?

Prayer

Father, thank You for reminding me that my journey with You is worth remembering. Forgive me for the times I’ve focused so much on how far I still have to go that I’ve failed to recognize how far You have already brought me.

Help me to see my life through the lens of Your faithfulness. Let me recognize the growth, healing, wisdom, and maturity You have developed in me along the way.

I know there is still more ahead, but I am encouraged because You are already there. You will never leave me or forsake me.

So today, I choose not only to keep moving forward.

I choose to look again—and thank You for every step we’ve already taken together.
