You Must Protect Your Blindside
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” — Proverbs 27:12 (NIV)
Life presents us with many challenges, and some of the greatest dangers are those we fail to see coming—our blindsides. In sports, especially football, a player’s blindside is the area they cannot see, making them vulnerable to unexpected attacks. In our spiritual lives, our blindside can be the areas where we are unaware of weaknesses, sinful tendencies, or external threats.
The enemy often takes advantage of our spiritual blind spots, subtly leading us away from God’s truth. We may become comfortable in our routines, assume we are strong enough to resist temptation, or overlook small compromises that eventually lead us astray. But God calls us to be vigilant and guard our hearts.
Protect Your Blindside
Be Watchful and Prayerful – Jesus reminds us in Matthew 26:41, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Seeking God in prayer keeps your heart aligned with Him and exposes areas where you need His protection.
Seek Wise Counsel – Proverbs 11:14 tells us, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.” We all need people in our lives who can help us see what we may be missing. God places mentors, pastors, and friends in our paths to help guide us.
Rely on God’s Word – The Bible is your ultimate source of wisdom and direction. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” When you consistently immerse yourself in scripture, you will develop discernment to recognize and avoid spiritual pitfalls.
Examine Yourself Regularly – 2 Corinthians 13:5 urges us to, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.” Self-reflection with the Holy Spirit’s guidance help you identify areas where you may be vulnerable.
Prayer
Father, thank You for being my protector and guide. Help me to recognize my spiritual blind spots and guard my heart against anything that would lead me away from You. I will use the wisdom, discernment, and the humility to seek counsel from those You have placed in my life. Your Word will be my guide, that I may walk in Your truth daily. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Be blessed,
