#3: When Rest Doesn’t Seem to Rest
Divine Inspirations | by Dee Davis
There are times when sleep does not feel like rest.
You may lie down at night, close your eyes, and still wake up carrying the same heaviness you felt before. The body may have been still, but the mind kept working. The heart kept worrying. The soul kept holding on.
For many women, that kind of fatigue is familiar.
It is the weariness that comes from caregiving, from unresolved stress, from too many demands, and from the quiet pressure of trying to be everything for everyone. It is not always a lack of sleep. Sometimes it is the presence of too much.
Jesus offers a different kind of rest. He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
This is not merely physical rest, though that matters too. This is soul rest. The kind of rest that comes from being held by Christ instead of being driven by pressure. The kind of rest that lets your heart unclench. The kind of rest that reminds you that you are not the one holding everything together.
Psalm 127:2 says, “He grants sleep to those he loves.”
That is a beautiful reminder that even sleep is a gift from God, not something we can force through sheer effort. And when sleep does not fully restore us, His presence can still steady us.
Sometimes what we need most is not just more rest, but deeper surrender.
Surrender of the burden.
Surrender of the need to control.
Surrender of the need to do what only God can do.
When your body is tired and your spirit feels stretched, come back to Jesus. He is not asking you to prove your strength. He is inviting you to receive His rest.
Reflection Question
What burden am I carrying that keeps my soul from resting, even when my body is still?
Action Steps
- Set aside a few quiet minutes today to sit with God without asking for anything.
- Identify one source of stress that can be reduced, postponed, or released.
- Create a simple bedtime prayer that helps you hand your worries back to the Lord.
- Ask God not only for sleep, but for soul rest.
Prayer
Jesus, I come to You weary and burdened. You know the weight I carry, even the weight I do not say out loud. Teach me to rest in You, not just sleep, but truly rest. Quiet my mind, steady my heart, and lift the burdens that have made me weary. Give me the rest that only Your presence can provide.
In Your name I pray,
Amen.
Stay encouraged and be blessed.
