Focus:

“From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety.” — Psalm 61:2 NLT

There have been times in my life when I was so overwhelmed that I couldn’t focus.

There was too much happening at once. Too much to think about. Too much to carry. Too many decisions to make. And although I wanted to figure out what to do next, I couldn’t even determine which way to go.

Maybe you know that feeling.

When your heart is overwhelmed, even simple things can feel heavy. Your thoughts become crowded. Your emotions become loud. And sometimes you are trying so hard to find an answer that you can’t see clearly enough to recognize which direction to take.

That is why David’s prayer in Psalm 61 speaks so deeply to me:

“When my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety.”

David doesn’t pretend he isn’t overwhelmed.

He doesn’t minimize what he is experiencing.

He cries out to God from the place where he actually is.

And I love that.

Because sometimes we think faith means we shouldn’t feel overwhelmed. We believe that because we know God, trust God, and have walked with God for years, we should somehow be immune to moments when life becomes too much.

But Scripture doesn’t teach us to deny what we feel.

It teaches us where to go with what we feel.

When You Can’t See Your Way

There are times when our circumstances may not change immediately.

The diagnosis may still be there.

The relationship may still be strained.

The answer may still be no.

The prayer may still seem unanswered.

The responsibility may still be ours to carry.

The pain is real.

The disappointment is real.

The uncertainty is real.

But they are not the only things that are real.

God is real too.

His strength is real.

His presence is real.

His peace is real.

His faithfulness is real.

And sometimes what we desperately need isn’t an immediate change in our circumstances.

We need a change in perspective.

I have needed God to do that for me.

There were times when I was looking at everything happening around me and couldn’t determine which way to go. I needed something beyond another opinion. Beyond another conversation. Beyond my own reasoning.

I needed God to lift my perspective above what I could see.

David prayed, “Lead me…”

Those two words minister to me.

He didn’t say, I’ll figure out how to get there.

He didn’t say, I’ll pull myself together.

He didn’t say, I’ll find my own way.

He said,

“Lead me.”

Sometimes an overwhelmed heart needs to stop trying to find its own way out and allow God to lead.

The Rock Is Higher

David asks God to lead him to a place higher than himself.

Higher than his present perspective.

Higher than his emotions.

Higher than his fear.

Higher than his disappointment.

Higher than what he could understand in that moment.

And perhaps that is what some of us need today.

Not necessarily for God to immediately remove everything that is overwhelming us, but for Him to bring us to a place where we can see what we’re facing from the security of who He is.

Isaiah 26:3 says:

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” — NLT

Peace doesn’t always arrive because the problem disappeared.

Sometimes peace comes because our attention has shifted.

We remember who God is.

We remember what He has already brought us through.

We remember that the same God who was faithful before has not changed.

And slowly, what felt bigger than us is placed beside the One who is bigger than it all.

Faith does not require me to deny what is real. It reminds me that what I see is not all that is real.

Where Do You Go?

Woman of God, when your heart becomes overwhelmed, where do you go?

Do you retreat into your thoughts?

Do you immediately reach for your phone?

Do you call everyone hoping someone can tell you what to do?

Do you rehearse every possible outcome until anxiety has convinced you that the worst one is inevitable?

Or do you allow your overwhelmed heart to become an invitation to cry:

“Lead me.”

Psalm 61 doesn’t give us a formula for eliminating overwhelm.

It gives us a destination.

The Rock.

And that Rock isn’t simply a better frame of mind. Our security is found in God Himself.

The circumstances may still be real when you finish praying.

But something can happen in His presence.

Your breathing slows.

Your thoughts begin to settle.

Your perspective begins to shift.

And perhaps you realize:

I don’t have to know everything right now.

I don’t have to solve everything today.

I don’t even have to know the entire way forward.

I just need to let God lead me to the Rock that is higher than I am.

One Gentle Charge

Today, before trying to fix what is overwhelming you, take it to God.

Name what is heavy. Don’t minimize it. Don’t spiritualize it. Don’t pretend it doesn’t hurt.

Then pray the words of Psalm 61:2:

“Lord, my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me.”

Sit there for a moment.

Remember His character before rehearsing your circumstances.

Remember His faithfulness before predicting your future.

And allow the God who sees what you cannot see to lift your perspective.

Your situation may not change immediately.

But from the Rock, you may see it differently.

Prayer

Father, when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me. When my thoughts are crowded and I don’t know which way to go, lift my eyes above what I can see. Help me not to deny what hurts, but also not to allow what hurts to become greater in my mind than who You are. Remind me of Your character, Your faithfulness, Your strength, and Your peace. When I cannot find my way, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I am. I trust You to hold me while You guide me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Stay encouraged and be blessed.
