If You Only Knew!

Focus Scripture: John 4:10 (NLT)

“Jesus replied, ‘If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.’”

There are moments in life when we disqualify ourselves before anyone else has the chance to.

We carry labels…

Mistakes…

Regrets…

Decisions we wish we could undo…

And if we’re honest—especially as women who have lived, loved, lost, and learned—we can sometimes settle into an identity shaped more by our past than by God’s promise.

But then… Jesus steps in.

A Divine Encounter That Changes Everything

In John 4, we find a woman who had every reason to feel overlooked, judged, and dismissed.

She was a Samaritan.

She was a woman.

She had a complicated past.

By every social standard of her day, she was someone to avoid—not engage.

Yet Jesus intentionally met her at the well.

Not by accident.

Not by convenience.

But by divine purpose.

And what’s so powerful is this:

Jesus spoke to her beyond how society saw her—and beyond how she saw herself.

“If You Only Knew…”

Those four words are filled with compassion and revelation.

“If you only knew…”

If you only knew:

• The gift God has for you

• Who you are really talking to

• What is available to you right now

This wasn’t just about water.

This was about identity.

Jesus was gently exposing the gap between:

• Who she thought she was

• And who she truly was in Him

He Buries the Old and Births the New

Before she could fully receive the living water, her past came up.

Not to shame her…

But to free her.

Jesus acknowledged her history without condemning her.

He didn’t rehearse her failures—He reframed her future.

What she saw as disqualification,

Jesus saw as an opportunity for transformation.

In that moment:

• Her old identity was exposed—but not empowered

• Her new identity was revealed and invited forward

And just like that…

The woman who came to draw water left with living water inside of her.

What About Us?

How often do we approach God with a limited view of ourselves?

We say:

• “God, you don’t understand what I’ve done…”

• “I’ve missed too many opportunities…”

• “I’m not who I used to be… and I don’t know who I am now…”

And Jesus gently responds:

“If you only knew…”

If you only knew:

• You are still chosen

• You are still seen

• You are still worthy of My presence

• You are not defined by what you’ve been through

Something to Meditate on...

What identity have you been holding onto that Jesus is trying to replace?

Is it:

• The identity shaped by past mistakes?

• The identity rooted in rejection or disappointment?

• The identity that says your best days are behind you?

Now ask yourself…

What is Jesus saying about me instead?

A Divine Exchange

The woman came carrying:

• Shame

• Questions

• Emptiness

She left carrying:

• Revelation

• Purpose

• A testimony

And so can you.

Because when Jesus meets you, He doesn’t just address your need…

He transforms your identity.

Final Encouragement

You are not too far gone.

You are not overlooked.

You are not disqualified.

Jesus is still meeting women at the well.

And today… He is speaking to you:

“If you only knew…”

If you only knew who you are becoming.

If you only knew what I placed inside of you.

If you only knew the life I have for you.

Don’t walk away from the well the same way you came.

Closing Prayer

Father God

Thank You for meeting me right where I am.

Thank You for seeing beyond my past and speaking into my future.

Help me to release every identity that is not rooted in You.

Give me the courage to receive the living water You offer—the kind that restores, renews, and redefines.

Open my eyes to see myself the way You see me.

Remind me daily that I am chosen, loved, and transformed by Your presence.
