#4: Laying Down What Is Not Mine

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from carrying what was never yours to carry.

Sometimes it looks like helping too much, fixing too much, worrying too much, or holding everyone’s emotions as though they are your responsibility. Sometimes it looks like doing what others are capable of doing for themselves. And sometimes it looks like silently absorbing burdens that belong to someone else.

Over time, that kind of weight becomes heavy.

Scripture gives us an important balance. Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” But just a few verses later, Galatians 6:5 says, “For each one should carry their own load.”

Both are true.

We are called to love one another, support one another, and help one another. But we are not called to become the savior of everyone around us. We are not called to take ownership of responsibilities that do not belong to us. We are not called to carry every emotion, every crisis, and every consequence.

That is where discernment becomes so important.

Loving someone does not mean you must do for them what they can do for themselves. Compassion does not require self-abandonment. Faithfulness does not mean we ignore our limits.

Some of the stress many women feel is not because they are doing too little, but because they are carrying too much. Learning to lay down what is not yours is not selfish. It is obedient. It is wise. It is a way of trusting God with what you cannot fix.

You do not have to carry every problem in your hands when you can place it in God’s.

Reflection Question

What am I carrying that belongs to someone else, and what would it look like to give it back to God?

Action Steps

- Identify one burden, task, or emotional weight that is not yours to solve.

- Practice saying, “I can support you, but I cannot carry this for you.”

- Pray before responding to every request for help, asking God for discernment.

- Release one responsibility this week that is outside your assignment.

Prayer

Lord, help me to discern what is mine to carry and what is not. Give me a loving heart without a burdened soul. Teach me to support others with wisdom and to release what was never meant for me. Strengthen me to live with healthy boundaries and a peaceful spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Stay encouraged and be blessed.
