The Thread of Unbelief

"Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24)

Throughout Scripture, —"unbelief"—reminds us of humanity's tendency to doubt God’s promises and power. This thread weaves through biblical stories, showing both the consequences of doubt and the transformative power of faith.

Unbelief first appeared in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve doubted God’s command, choosing instead to believe the serpent's lies. Their unbelief led to sin and the fall of humanity (Genesis 3).

Later, the Israelites, freshly delivered from Egypt, doubted God's ability to lead them into the Promised Land. Despite witnessing miraculous deliverance, their unbelief prolonged their wilderness journey (Numbers 14).

Even the prophets and kings wrestled with unbelief. Elijah, after his great victory over the prophets of Baal, fled in fear and doubt when threatened by Jezebel (1 Kings 19). King Saul’s failure to trust and obey God resulted in his downfall (1 Samuel 15).

In the New Testament, Jesus encountered unbelief among His followers and those He ministered to.

Even His disciples struggled to fully trust Him, prompting Jesus to remind them that faith as small as a mustard seed could move mountains (Matthew 17:20).

Unbelief isn’t just a biblical problem—it’s a human problem.

Today, and it shows up in many ways:

  • Doubting God's promises when faced with uncertainty.

  • Questioning God’s plan during difficult seasons.

  • Relying on ourselves instead of trusting God’s sovereignty.

  • Struggling with faith in one area of life while being strong in others.

  • Feeling distant from God in moments of spiritual dryness.

If we allow the words and spirit of unbelief to effect what you know and believe, it will ruin the fabric of your faith.

For those of us who have experienced trauma, unbelief can be particularly profound.

Trauma may lead to questioning God’s presence, struggling to trust His goodness, or feeling unworthy of His love. These challenges can isolate us, making it even harder to trust in God’s healing power.

But the good news is this: God meets us in our unbelief and trauma!

He is patient, kind, compassionate, and ready to guide us through healing from trauma and restoring our faith. Even in our doubt, we can turn to Him in prayer, seek support from a faith community, and rely on His promises.

The thread of unbelief may weave through our lives in various ways, but it doesn’t have to define us! God invites us to trust Him, even when the path ahead seems uncertain. Let us bring our doubts to the One who is faithful, knowing that His love and grace are sufficient to carry us through.

"Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24).

Prayer

Father,  thank You for Your Word that reveals the struggles of unbelief we face in our busy lives. I confess that I, like Adam and Eve, the Israelites, and even the disciples, have struggled with doubt at times.  Father, through your Spirit, help my unbelief.  Help me to trust in Your promises, hold fast to our faith, and to believe that You are with me always. Heal my heart, strengthen my trust in You, and give me the courage to walk in faith. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Be blessed,

Dee Davis
